Hotlix Insect Candy in Pictures

Saturday, January 23, 2010

The brainchild of Larry Peterman, 70, HOTLIX have expanded their line to include devilish delights from apple, lemon and orange flavoured Cricket Suckers to Amber InsectNside and spice-flavoured Larvets. “Larry has what he calls the worm ranch where he grows all of the insects for food products,” revealedKaty. “Our latest insect candy has been the chocolate flavoured scorpion which have proved to be very popular.”
Katy is quick to point out that everything at HOTLIX is edible. “I get a lot of questions about this but yes everything is edible – even the scorpions,” she said. “Many people think the scorpions are poisonous but when a scorpion dies it is not longer venomous. It is cooked before it is put into the candy so a lot of it is actually protein. It actually could be quite good for you, but we do cut off the stinger just to make sure there is no hint of poison.” “We feed the worms things like oatmeal, apple peel and banana peel so they are clean bugs filled with nutrients.”
And like the chocolatier from Roald Dahl’s hit children’s book, Larry is very protective of the secret process behind making insect candy. “The owner does not divulge exactly what the process is before they are cooked because over the years we have had a lot of people who have tried to copy the process. So far though our secrets have stayed safe and sound.”

Future Now

Thursday, December 4, 2008

The above picture is probably the weirdest, ugliest, scariest little thing I’ve ever seen. The scariest part is that it’s real. It took me a while to realize that the whole thing wasn’t some elaborate hoax. But apparently, Genpets Inc. is ready to mass produce these little guys.

The futuristic package contains a small pet. According to their website: That’s right, Genpets are not toys or robots. They are living, breathing genetic animals.

Genpets™ have limited mobility. Like dolls, puppies or human babies, they must be looked after and cared for. Upon waking from its dormant state the Genpet™ will immediately bond or imprint to your child.

The Genpet™ line-up pulls its basis from a natural1 stage of evolution in the market. Dolls and robotic toys quickly become tiresome, while traditional pets require a high level of upkeep. Genpets™ however, learn and adapt. They are living pets, but better, modified to be as reliable, dependable and efficient as any other technology we use in our busy lives.

Scared yet? I’m teaching my grade seven science class about the requirements of all living things. They must eat, drink, find a habitat (shelter) and exchange gases. According to the textbook, all living organisms must meet these four needs to stay alive. Genpets barely need to eat or drink. You feed them a special ‘nutrient mix’ once a week. They can live in a little plastic sleeve in some weird hybernating state until you ‘open them’. Apparently they’re breathing in their little packages until you open them. They live for a predetermined length of time. You can purchase the 1 year or 3 year model. When they die, you are allowed to bury them in your back yard, or send them back to genpets to be recycled. Freaky!

A Man With Tree Body

Monday, December 1, 2008

I might be the last person in blog world to pick up on this story, but it was the first I’ve heard of it.

This poor guy’s name is Dede. He’s an Indonesian with a serious wart problem. According to various websites, as a 15 year old, Dede had some kind of an accident during which he cut his knee. In the next couple of weeks he noticed that he was developing warts and lesions. Eventually they began to take on a life of their own, turning into what appears as a woody bark.

Dede lost his wife, and the ability to care for himself. He lives with a cousin who helps clean and feed him, and cares for his two children. There is a number of funny (yet funny only at Dede’s expense) kind of jokes that come to mind, however I’m going to avoid them and just focus on the sad state of life this fellow finds himself in.

An American dermatologist has been in touch with Dede, and believes that his unique case is caused by a combination of some sort of auto-immune disease that negatively affects his bodies ability to fight off infection, and HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) which he may have contracted when he cut himself. The good doctor believes that a daily dosage of Vitamin A will have a big effect, and has taken samples to study further.

Dede spent some time traveling with a kind of freak show that paid him a small amount of money.
